In the 12th century with the introduction of the pot helmet, the individual knight could no longer be recognized by his face, and another means of identification became necessary. Therefore their shields were painted in boldly contrasting colours and because armorial bearings were designed for battle, fierce animals were displayed as well.
Out of our production we have left a few shields unpainted for modern knights who want to paint their own design on their shield.
