Helmets with a face mask hinged at the middle of the forehead and two cheek pieces were used in Roman cavalry units (alae) from about 100 A.D. till 400 A.D.

Experts believe that in the year 9AD Varus fought his last battle against Germanic tribes there and 3 legions were lost (exactly 2000 years ago). This type of mask is tinned in an antiqued finish.

The helmets shipped by Deepeeka before 2008 were furnished with a cast bronze mask which was so heavy that it pulled the entire helmet down on the bearer's face.

I am selling a "Roman" face mask for the welknown cavalry helmet AH6049 for reenactors. A similar mask was found recently at the Kalkriese site in Northern Germany.

Now you can buy and attach this much lighter face mask of 250 g (0.5 lbs) in tinned brass and your helmet will be well balanced and sit correctly.

The dimensions are as follows:
16.5 cm/6.5" wide from top left to right rim
17 cm/6.7" long
7 cm/2.75" length between the eye openings and the mouth
Thickness of metal: 2,5 mm = 0.098" = 13 gauge
