AH3967 - Viking / Norman kite shield (Bayeux tapestry)
When William the Conqueror sailed across theChannel in 1066 on his boat he carried ashield displayed at the stern, see yourself:
His foot soldiers (and the English infantry) were equipped with such shields to protect them from the archers' arrows.
The shields were held with one hand on a grip behind the central boss (see ourright photo below).
Our kite shield replica is made from iron and weighs 6.5 kgs.(14 lbs.):
It is 136 cms. (53.3") high and 62 cms.(24.5")wide.
