The Aquila (latin eagle) was the highest rank of the Roman legion from Marius (ca. 104 AD) and thus different animals as legion marks.
The Aquila enjoyed the greatest worship among all the signs, and their loss was a great disgrace. That's why everything was done to regain lost Aquilae.
This beautiful reconstruction of an aquila served various pictorial representations as a model. Unfortunately, no ancient Aquilae have survived.
